Cheek pullers
There is a variety of possible
explanations for the image of a cheek puller or mouth puller. It has been
written that cheek pulling was a popular pastime in medieval Europe, existing
into modern times. The extended tongue was believed to ward off evil!
Some other accounts offer a more sinister explanation
attributing the image to be one born by gluttony.
No matter what the actual
meaning is, cheek pullers offer an intriguing and fanciful addition to your
garden. Although not specifically designed as a bird house, a cheek puller can
be easily made to accommodate birds upon request.
The size range is approximately
15"-16" tall by 12" wide by 8"-9" deep. Size will vary.
Cheek pullers and Corbels are not number
coded since each one is made to be different; I rarely repeat a design. If
specific identification is important for reference, the item may be noted by row
and column.
Corbels
Corbels are simply a derivation of
the cheek puller. Plain corbels are made as wall hung supports for potted plants
or other favorite decorations for your garden or patio.
Although most of the corbels I have made
are primarily "trollish" types, other critters can be adapted to the corbel
style. Dimensions are approximately the same as the dimensions of cheek pullers.
